Regulatory Rules & Legal Protection
Computer and IT hardware disposal in India is governed primarily by the E-Waste (Management) Rules, 2022, in force since 1 April 2023 (replacing the 2016 Rules), along with the E-Waste (Management) Amendment Rules, 2023. Computers, laptops, printers, and related IT/telecom equipment fall under the "Information Technology and Telecommunication Equipment" category of Schedule I. Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) recycling targets rise progressively — 60% for 2023-24 and 2024-25, 70% for 2025-26 and 2026-27, climbing to 80% from 2027-28 onward — and e-waste recyclers/dismantlers must be registered on CPCB's centralized EPR portal.
